Etf = Exchange Traded Fund.
You can BUY / SELL Gold through MCXIndia / NSE. You have to register with any one of the broker to trade in Gold as it is commodity. You have to go to register yourself with any Commodity Exchange Broker.
This is alternative to invest in Gold without buying it yourself. Typically mutual fund companies will buy the gold in large quantities and store these in secured vault. They will ‘list’ this Gold on stock exchanges like normal equity shares. You can buy the gold like share of a company using online trading or through your broker. The listing price of gold is normally linked to national gold price. You do not need memebership to commodity exchange as someone has suggested here.
Advantages are -
1. You can buy as little as 1/2 gram of gold
2. You don’t need secured storage as your gold shares are stored in your DMAT account
3. You can sell it whenever you want at current market price using online trading/broker

Symbol GLD in the NYSE. You buy shares in it like you buy shares in any NY listed company through any stock broker.
ETF stands for "Exchange Traded Fund" . An ETF works like a mutual fund in that it holds positions in different stocks related to the ETF but it trades like a stock and has a stock symbol. Some of the commodity ETF’s just track the price of the commodity. For instance GLD is the trading symbol for the Gold ETF and SLV tracks the price of 10 ounces of silver. The ETF GDX is the Gold Miners ETF and tracks the price 10 different gold mining stocks. So sort of a mini mutual fund that trades like a stock.
