Carrying currency/travellers cheque to japan?

I am an Australian traveling on my first trip to Japan, and I don't know how safe Japan is.
I'm think of taking all cash for travel to Japan. It will be concealed in a internal pouch underneath my shirt. Should I invest in some traveller's cheques? Whats your experience carrying currency?

How and where can I invest in foreign currencies?

Where can I invest in or buy foreign currencies securely on the internet? Or where at least can I learn more about such investing?
I am interested in buying foreign currencies and holding them until their value against other currencies (hopefully) improves. For example buying euros, pounds or yen and sitting on them. [...]

how would one invest in chinese currency?

I know you can invest in other curreny's but am unfalilliar with the proccess.
Also, how long would you hold on "yen"????

As a U.S. citizen, can I purchase foreign currency & invest or receive interest on those $ in a US account?

Can I buy euros or yen for ex; in a US brokerage account? Or can I only hold the foreign currency in cash? How can I protect my US cash from being de-valued other than to buy foreign ETFs, foreign stock, etc…?
I DO want interest or to invest as the currency (not US dollars) and [...]

investing in foriegn currency?

with the american dollar falling and bush about to make it drop even more would it be wise to invest in chinese yen? especially considering their economy is booming.
if so.. how would you do this? is there a way to do it without paying some one else to help you? or to do it [...]
